Between 2009 and 2016 approximately 800 dwellings will be built at Sørenga in Bjørvika, Oslo, offering a fantastic location right on the waterfront. The area is unique in that it is surrounded by the fjord on three sides. Among the facilities planned are a park and bathing complex, a long harbour promenade with shops, cafés and restaurants and a marina. As well as underground parking facilities, there will also be storage units where residents can stow their kayaks.
A new city district is taking shape
Bjørvika will be a completely new district in the city of Oslo, and will open the city outwards towards the sea and provide everyone with opportunities to enjoy life along the quayside. More than 30,000 people will live or work here once the area is fully developed.
Bjørvika will also become Norway’s cultural hub: the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, the Munch Museum, the Stenersen Museum and the Deichman Library will attract visitors from all over the world. In addition, large-scale and popular events such as the Oslo Medieval Festival and the Øya Festival are held in Bjørvika every year.
The best location in Fjord City
With the Opera House as its nearest neighbour, the Sørenga Pier stretches out into the fjord and offers a unique residential area surrounded by water on three sides. This will perhaps make the dwellings at Sørenga the best location in Oslo. The city’s inhabitants and visitors can look forward to attractive facilities and activities on the pier.
A total of eight building phases are planned for completion by 2016.
The first building phase consists of three separate buildings of between five and seven floors. Building Phase 1 was ready for occupancy in the autumn of 2011.
The second building phase, where most of the top-floor apartments have private terraces, consists of four buildings with 93 apartments and a secluded courtyard above the harbour promenade and was finished in august 2012. The third building phase is designed around an atrium. This contains 127 apartments, 19 of which are so-called rooftop apartments with terraces measuring up to 150 sq m. The façade evokes associations with a ship’s hull, and the sea-facing balconies protrude like the bridge of a ship above the harbour promenade and the marina. Next building phase, phase 4, will be ready for occupancy in the autumn of 2013. Phase 6 was put on the market in January 2013 and 45 flats are sold pr april 2013..

Team of architects
A team of four of Norway’s best firms of architects, all of whom have experience from large-scale housing projects of high architectural quality, are behind the development of Sørenga. LPO, arkitekt MAD AS, Arkitektkontoret Kari Nissen Brodtkorb AS and Jarmund/Vigsnæs AS, Arkitekter MNAL in collaboration with 4B Arkitekter AS and Context AS.
At the far end of the pier is a park and bathing area that will be open to the public. Most of the commercial premises, cafés and restaurants will face the harbour promenade at the end of the west side of the pier, where the evening sun can be enjoyed. The harbour promenade will stretch around Sørenga and continue in towards the Opera House and Bjørvika. In practice, this means that at some time in the future it will be possible to walk along the quayside from Bygdøy in the west, through the whole city and out to Sørenga in the east.
Communal benefits at Sørenga
The residents of Sørenga will be able to enjoy a living environment with facilities that are not found many other places in Norway. There are plans for a harbour, harbour promenade and an underground car park for regular cars and electric cars. There are also plans to provide a designated room for stowing kayaks in the residential blocks. The attractive Central Park will gradually be developed as the blocks are completed. The city’s only outdoor seawater swimming facilities will be located at the far end of Sørenga Pier.
